Why is Reddit blocking me, and how to fix it

Reddit blocks traffic it thinks is automated. Most of the time that is a VPN, a shared network or a browser extension, not anything you did.

Reddit blocks your IP when traffic from it looks automated: a VPN or proxy, a data-centre IP, a network many people share, or a lot of requests in a short time. The message usually reads "You've been blocked by network security". The quickest fix is to log in, then turn off your VPN or switch to mobile data. It is a network block, not a ban on your account.

What triggers the block

CauseWhy Reddit blocks it
VPN or proxyThousands of users share the same exit IP, and scrapers use the same services
Data-centre or cloud IPReal people rarely browse from servers, so Reddit treats it as a bot
Shared network (office, school, hotel, café)One IP sends a lot of requests on behalf of many people
Browser extensionsSome extensions fetch Reddit pages in the background
Too many requestsRefreshing fast, opening many tabs or running a script hits rate limits
Logged outReddit is stricter with logged-out traffic than with signed-in accounts

7 fixes, in order

  • Log in. The block page often lets signed-in users through.
  • Turn off your VPN or proxy, or switch to a different server location.
  • Switch networks: try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.
  • Restart your router. Many home connections get a new IP when they reconnect.
  • Disable browser extensions, then clear reddit.com cookies and cache.
  • Use the official Reddit app instead of the browser.
  • Wait. Rate-limit blocks usually clear on their own within a few hours.

Is my account banned?

No. A network block is about your IP address, and it appears even when you are logged out. If you can log in but your posts get no replies or votes, that is a different problem: run the shadowban checker or read how to tell if you are banned on Reddit.

If you were scraping Reddit

Scripts and scrapers are what the block is built to stop. Use Reddit's official API with a registered app and stay within its limits. If you only need alerts when keywords appear, a monitoring tool does the reading for you. See the best Reddit monitoring tools.

Common questions

Reddit thinks traffic from your IP is automated, usually because of a VPN, a shared or data-centre IP, a browser extension, or too many requests. Log in, turn off the VPN or switch networks.

Rate-limit blocks usually clear within a few hours. Blocks on VPN and data-centre IPs last as long as you use that IP, so switching network is faster than waiting.

Often, yes. Popular VPN servers share one IP between many users, and Reddit blocks or challenges many of them. Switching server or turning the VPN off usually fixes it.
