How to search Reddit effectively

Reddit's search is better than its reputation, once you know the operators. Here is how to search by date, by subreddit and by exact phrase.
To search Reddit effectively, put exact phrases in quotes, limit the search to one subreddit with subreddit:name, sort by New, and set the time filter to Past week. To search Reddit from Google, add site:reddit.com to your query. For finding customers, search for how buyers ask, such as "looking for" or "alternative to", rather than for your product category.
Search Reddit posts from the last week, newest first.

| Operator | Example | What it does |
|---|---|---|

| subreddit: | subreddit:smallbusiness CRM | Only posts in one subreddit |
| author: | author:spez | Only posts by one user |
| title: | title:recommendation | Match the post title only |
| self:yes | self:yes hire | Text posts only, no links |
| OR / NOT | crm NOT salesforce | Combine or exclude words |
How to search Reddit by date
Search, then choose Sort: New, or keep Relevance and set the time filter to Past hour, day, week, month or year. Reddit has no custom date range in its own search. For a specific range, search from Google and use its Tools → Any time menu.
How to search Reddit comments
Reddit's search finds posts first; comments sit behind a Comments tab in the results. That matters because recommendations and complaints usually live in replies, not titles. To search comment text directly and jump to each comment, use the free Reddit comment search.
How to search Reddit from Google
Add site:reddit.com to a Google search, for example: best crm for small agency site:reddit.com. Google's index is often better at old threads; Reddit's own search is better for anything posted in the last day.
Search phrases that find buyers
- "looking for" + what you sell
- "alternative to" + a competitor
- "recommend" or "recommendations" + your category
- "worth it" + a competitor or category
- "hire" or "for hire" in freelance and local subreddits
Run these every morning and answer the fresh ones first. A reply in the first hour gets read; a reply under fifty others does not.
When to stop searching by hand
Searching works until you need it every day across a dozen subreddits. Keyword alerts like F5Bot email every match, which gets noisy. Leadhoot reads each new post in your subreddits and only alerts you about the ones it scores as high buyer intent.
