Reddit marketing: a practical guide for small teams

Reddit punishes anything that looks like marketing. That is why it works: the brands that win there look like helpful people, because they are.
Reddit marketing works when you join the conversations your buyers are already having instead of broadcasting to them. In practice that means three things: pick the subreddits where your customers ask for help, answer their questions better than anyone else in the thread, and mention your product only when it is the honest answer. Ads and your own posts come after, not before.
Why Reddit is different from other channels
- Communities are run by volunteer moderators with their own rules. What is fine in one subreddit gets you banned in the next.
- Votes decide visibility. A promotional post is downvoted out of sight within minutes; a useful comment can sit at the top of a thread for years.
- Threads rank in Google and get quoted by AI assistants, so one good answer keeps sending readers long after the post goes quiet.
Step 1: choose 5 to 15 subreddits
Pick subreddits where your buyers ask questions, not where your peers chat. A bookkeeper finds clients in r/smallbusiness, not r/Accounting. Check that each one posts daily and that question posts get answers.
Find subreddits for any topic, ranked by members.
Open the subreddit finderStep 2: build a real account first
Many subreddits filter new or low-karma accounts automatically. Spend two or three weeks commenting helpfully before you mention anything you sell. Use your real name or brand in your profile so people can find you after a good answer.
Step 3: follow the 90/10 rule
A long-standing Reddit guideline is that no more than about one in ten of your contributions should be about your own product. Treat it as a ceiling. Most of what you post should be useful whether or not anyone ever clicks your profile.
Step 4: answer buyer-intent posts early
The highest-value threads are people asking for a recommendation, a quote or an alternative to a tool. Search for phrases like "looking for", "recommend" and "alternative to" in your subreddits every day, and answer the fresh ones first. A reply in the first hour gets read.
| Approach | Result |
|---|---|
| Post a link to your product | Removed or downvoted, account flagged |
| DM people who posted | Reported as spam, often banned |
| Answer the question, disclose you make a tool | Upvoted, profile visits, inbound DMs |
| Write a genuinely useful guide post | Saved and shared, ranks in Google |
Step 5: post your own content, carefully
Once people recognise your name, share what you learned: a teardown, numbers from an experiment, a checklist. Put the value in the post itself, not behind a link. Check each subreddit's rules on self-promotion; many allow it only in a weekly thread.
When Reddit Ads make sense
Reddit Ads can target by subreddit and interest, which suits products with a clear community. They work best after you know which subreddits convert from organic replies, so you are paying to reach audiences you have already tested. Expect blunt comments on ads; reply to them like you would to any thread.
Measure what matters
- Replies posted to buyer-intent threads each week.
- Profile visits and DMs from those replies.
- Signups or calls you can trace to Reddit, using a UTM link in your profile.
The bottleneck is almost always finding the right posts in time. Leadhoot watches your subreddits, scores every new post from 0 to 100 for buyer intent, and alerts you about the high scorers, so the hour you spend on Reddit goes to replying instead of scrolling.
