Upwork Fee Calculator: What You Take Home
What this tells you
Upwork takes a service fee from every payment you earn, then a small fee when you withdraw. Enter the contract amount and the fee rates shown on your own Upwork account, and this works out what lands in your bank and what you would need to bill to take home a target amount. Upwork changes its fees from time to time, so check the current rate in your account and adjust the field.

At those numbers
- Service fee
- $100
- You take home
- $898
- Bill this to net your target
- $1,113
- Effective fee
- 10%
This is arithmetic on the numbers you entered, nothing here is a forecast or a promise about results.
The formula
after service fee = contract × (1 − service fee) · take-home = after service fee − withdrawal fee · to net a target, bill = (target + withdrawal fee) ÷ (1 − service fee)
How to read the result
- The rate to quote is the gross one. If you want $1,000 in hand, the second output tells you what to put in the proposal.
- Bundling work into fewer, larger milestones means fewer withdrawals and fewer flat fees.
- Clients you find yourself, on Reddit, X or through referrals, cost no platform fee at all. Even moving one client off-platform over time is worth more than haggling over rates.
- Fee percentages here are inputs, not facts we assume. Use the numbers on your own Upwork dashboard.
